Fernando Rodríguez Artalejo is Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He is a physician (MD degree in 1983) with a PhD in Medicine and Surgery obtained in 1986 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). Also in 1986 he completed his training as a specialist physician in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid. He has professional experience in health administration, having held responsibilities in the area of epidemiology and health planning in the Spanish Ministry of Health (1985-1990). Subsequently, he obtained a postdoctoral Fulbright fellowship for moving to the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health (Baltimore, USA), where he worked as Visiting Assistant Professor in 1990-1991. In the period 1992-1995 he served as Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the UAM, and then moved as Full Professor to the University of the Basque Country (1995-2000). Since 2000 he has been working at the UAM. He has been a member of the European Advisory Committee for Health Research of the World Health Organization-EURO (2015-2019), the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (2004-2008), the International Scientific Committee of Nutri-Score (2020-present) and the Spanish Council of Drug Addiction at the Ministry of Health (2016-present). Also he has chaired the scientific committee of the Advantage Joint Action of the European Union (2028-019), and served as President of the Observatory of Nutrition and Obesity Study of the Ministry of Consumers Affairs (2019-present). Dr. Rodríguez Artalejo is also affiliated with the CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health, the Hospital La Paz Institute for Health Research (IDIPAZ), and IMDEA Food (all in Madrid)

Research

Lines of Research

Dr. Rodriguez Artalejo’s research has focused on the natural history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, frailty and disability, and the identification of its dietary and other lifestyle determinants. Over the last 10 years, the results of his work have served to support the National Strategies for Prevention and Control of Cardiovascular Diseases, the NAOS (diet, physical activity and obesity) Strategy, and the Strategy for Frailty and Falls Prevention in older adults. Dr, Rodríguez Artalejo is co-principal investigator of the Seniors-ENRICA cohort-1 and the Seniors-ENRICA cohort-2.

 

Publicaciones

His research has resulted in numerous publications in national and international journals, mainly in the area of cardiovascular and nutritional epidemiology, diet-based prevention of frailty in older adults, and the use epidemiological knowledge in planning and evaluation of health services.
