"Internationalisation and academic freedom"  - ACA-IKY Seminar

In many European countries, but also beyond this continent, we are witnessing strong populist, anti-intellectual and ultra-conservative tendencies. In not a few cases, ultra-conservative parties are part of government coalitions and have an impact on government policies. Often, this has equally a - usually restrictive - impact on academic freedom. Not rarely, the jobs and even the lives of scholars and professors are at risk. But there appear to be also populist governments that do not interfere too much in higher education, either because the ministry of education has successfully resisted efforts of interference from the governments' top leadership, or because there are strong legal or even constitutional barriers guaranteeing academic and institutional freedom.

This seminar will explore the relationship between populism, anti-intellectualism, ultra-conservative government and anti-elitist tendencies on the one hand and, on the other, higher education in general, and academic freedom and internationalisation in particular.  Do populist governments (always) pursue anti-international policies, reduce funding and programmes for international mobility and projects, and do they (always) discourage universities and colleges to engage in internationalisation? This is one key question on the seminar agenda. Another one is how internationalisation agencies (like IKY) and higher education institutions in functioning democracies (should) respond to countries and universities which restrict academic freedom. Should they suspend cooperation with these countries and their higher education sector or should they reinforce it, as a sign of solidarity with the threatened academics and in the hope that continued cooperation will 'infect' the problematic countries with a 'democracy virus'?

In their choice of speakers, moderators, and panellists, IKY and ACA have followed a simple policy: only the best! By way of example, we are here mentioning only some of the high-quality speakers: Kostas Gavroglou, the Greek Education Minister, Sijbolt Noorda, the President of the Magna Charta Observatory and former ACA President, Ulrich Grothus, the ACA President and Deputy Secretary General of DAAD, Allan Goodman, the CEO of the Institute for International Education in NYC and Marijk van der Wende, Distinguished Professor for Higher Education at Utrecht University.

The seminar is a co-production of ACA and its Greek member IKY. It will be held in beautiful spring-time Athens on 27 April 2018, with a reception on the previous evening.

We recommend you save the date. ACA and IKY look forward to welcoming you at this exciting event.

Registrations will open in early March.

Staff Training Week 2018
Welcoming Students
18 - 22 June 2018
Alma Mater Studiorum  - Università di Bologna, Italy

Students entering university life come across several challenges and novelties and need guidance, a pointer, a reflection in order to offer them a route to follow, or a tool to get over a hurdle and back on track. Student Services are designed to provide students with the help students need in making the best university experience possible.

Student Services constitute a huge challenge for university administrators: on one hand, you must have functional tools working in everyday practice, on the other you must find the best practices, taking into consideration and harmonizing the interests of students, universities and administrators. This staff-training week aims at presenting some experiences.
