Functions Introduction The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) was established in 1958 by the International Council for Science (ICSU). SCAR is a non-governmental, multidisciplinary scientific organization dedicated to promote and co-ordinate scientific research in Antarctica. SCAR also provides objective and independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty. In 2002 SCAR received the Prince of Asturias Award on International Cooperation, as a recognition to the values that SCAR represents since it was created. SCAR is constituted by 34 countries (30 Full Members and 4 Associate Members), each of them having a national committee. Spain joined SCAR as a full member in 1990, after having been an associate member since 1987 and demonstrated enough international scientific contributions as well as its commitment with Antarctic research. SCAR is one of the
main participants involved in the International
Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY). - Brochure about the Spanish National SCAR Committee - Poster about the Spanish National SCAR Committee Functions Connection with other bodies The Spanish National SCAR Committee, whose members are all scientists, is an independent committee which, as all other ICSU comittees, voluntarily carries out supporting activities within the structure of the Deputy Direction of International Programmes and Organizations of the Ministry of Science and Innovation. An Spanish ICSU Committee has been recently created consisting of the presidents of the National Research Committees and representatives of the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN). See lists of committees See information about ICSU Through the Deputy Direction of International Programmes and Organizations, the National SCAR Committee is linked with the Spanish Polar Committee, who is in charge of the general coordination of different agencies participating in Spanish polar activities, as well as enforcing the fulfilment of the Antarctic Treaty rules. The committee is linked to the National Program of Polar Research, through which the Spanish Science and Technology system finances Spanish research in Antarctica. The SCAR National Committee is one of the member bodies of the Spanish Committee on Global Change Research (CEICAG), created to promote interdisciplinary global change research in Spain in co-ordination with international research programmes.
