Les caractères ostéoscopiques chez les Mammifères actuels et fossiles. Histoire de la méthode et apport à la connaissance des populations. Cecile Callou

ABSTRACT : Zooarchaeology and, to a lesser extent, zoology still make little use of osteostopic (discrete) characters in intraspecific analyses. In this paper, the history of the method is reviewed, starting with the earliest descriptions of human discrete characters which later shift to observations on animals and culminate with recent zoological studies that compare the results produced by the study of discrete characters with alternative approaches. Through out this review, we intend to show the interest of the method for a knowledge of modern and fossil animal populations.
