In view of the catastrophe unleashed by the earthquake of 12 January in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, we, the public universities of Madrid, grouped together in the CRUMA, wish to express our condolences to the victims and to carry out an urgent action of solidarity with them. In order to do so, in accordance with the provisions of the Agreement between our universities and the Spanish Red Cross for Humanitarian Crises, and in particular clauses three, four and five:
1. The Universities of the CRUMA will immediately activate the institutional contributions provided for in clause four concerning the Madrid University Fund for humanitarian crises, by means of bank transfer to current account number 2038-0603-21-6002450696 in the name of CRUZ ROJA (Red Cross) with Caja Madrid, and current account number 0049-1892-67-2910379703 in the name of CRUZ ROJA (Red Cross) with Banco Santander Central Hispano.
2. The Universities appeal to university entities and members of the university community in general to co-operate in the actions in support of the victims, channelling their contributions through the accounts of the Madrid University Fund for humanitarian crises.
3. The cost of actions developed with the Madrid University Fund for humanitarian crises must be incurred and evidenced in accordance with the procedures, principles and terms established by the signatory Entities, ensuring maximum disclosure and transparency in administering and applying resources.
4. In accordance with the agreement, the Madrid universities will:
provide adequate dissemination of the campaigns carried out in collaboration between the RED CROSS and the participating Universities.
They will organise talks and debates on humanitarian catastrophes and their consequences, bringing to the University centres experts acquainted with the reality of the affected areas and able to explain the work being carried out.
They will continue to maintain information on the needs of the affected population throughout the process of reconstruction.
- In the med term, the participating entities may collaborate, at the request of the Red Cross in the academic restoration of the higher centres of learning in the stricken areas, sending materials and facilitating the intake of students or visiting attachments of teachers.
- The universities will if necessary facilitate the incorporation of qualified volunteer personnel from the university community to collaborate with the Red Cross as professional experts on certain humanitarian crisis situations.
5. We in the Madrid public universities hope that international aid will enable the number of victims to be minimised and will mitigate as much as possible the damage caused, as well as facilitating the reconstruction work that needs to be undertaken.
