The main purpose of this course is to offer a comprehensive overview of the different writing systems that mankind has devised over the centuries: from its earliest manifestations in the Near East (cuneiform) and Egypt (hieroglyphic) through the systems developed for the Semitic languages and pre-Roman Spain, the impact of the Greek and Roman alphabets on the Western world, not forgetting writing systems of cultures far removed from our own such as the pre-Colombian, Chinese and Japanese cultures, as well as the problems of deciphering written codes.
