IBM lecture cycle: “Construyamos un planeta más inteligente” (Building a smarter planet)
The cycle of lectures, organised by IBM in collaboration with the School of Engineering of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the UAM foundation, is intended for the entire University community as a meeting place for discussing different subjects. The cycle consists of four lectures to be given on: Smarter Planet, 18 February; La ciencia de los servicios (The science of services), 18 March; Smart Business: Cloud Computing y más allá (Cloud computing and beyond), 15 April; and Global Technology Outlook, 20 May.
Smarter Planet

We live in a highly complex, changeable, challenging world. The intense economic crisis which began in late 2008, the most severe of the last 80 years, can be seen as the harshest face of this complex world, or as an opportunity to rethink, redefine and act.
From this position, the difficulties surrounding us are still enormous and deep, but not unsolvable or paralysing. In fact, this is where it becomes possible to grasp the significant and valuable possibilities which a time like this offers us. This new world has a keyword: intelligence.
We know that the world is now smaller, less varied, due to the intense process of globalisation, but now we also know that it is becoming smarter… The gradual incorporation of intelligence to the way the world works is a fact… Physical and digital infrastructures are converging to create an extraordinary platform for doing things differently and transforming all the systems and processes which make up the economy and society.
Why is this happening?
The world is becoming more “instrumental”, more manageable, thanks to technology.
The world is becoming interconnected.
Intelligence, understood as the capacity to manage information efficiently and to act, is becoming ubiquitous.
In IBM we believe that this can and must be the decade of smart, understood as the period when the enormous technological and human potential converging in our time can open new spaces for wellbeing, intelligence and improvement.
