On 27 January there was an informational event about the missions of the United Nations Organisation (UN) to introduce students in the final year of bachelor's degrees and Postgraduate studies at UAM to the possibilities for a professional career in the different agencies of this body.
The deputy vice-chancellor for International Relations, Maria Asunción Martínez Cebrián, and the Spanish special ambassador for international organisations in Africa, Fernando Morán, thanked the audience for the large turnout, and started the event, held in the Teacher Training and Education faculty.
The event, organised by the deputy vice-chancellor's office for International Relations, featured the participation of the head of the United Nations Secretariat, Marta Elena López, who explained the content of the event, John Eriksson, of the United Nations Secretariat, Michael Emery and Els Ravys, from the United Nations Development Programme (PNUD); Luz González and Alanna Armitage, of the United Nations Population Fund (FNUAP); and Elena Domínguez of Unicef.
The contributors made a very dynamic presentation of the projects they are involved in, and talked about the various work opportunities and programmes available for young people in this international body. They also discussed the requirements for forming part of the United Nations, emphasising: “having a high level of integration and flexibility for understanding people from different cultures, being able to keep your spirits high in uncertain and sometimes very difficult situations, and having a great humanity,” among other, also very important, qualities.
The event then split into three workshops with three different subjects, which the audience had to choose. One of the activities dealt with the process of applying to work at the UN; another, how to prepare a telephone interview with the UN, and finally, how to develop a professional career in the UN.
Students who are interested can deliver their CV, addressed to the deputy vice-chancellor for International Relations, at the General Registry of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Vice-chancellor's office, ground floor), until 10 February.
