Descripción del servicio

The Large File Exchange System (SEGA)  is a tool with which UAM personnel can exchange files with others (from UAM or elsewhere), guaranteeing that only those specified by the file depositor will have access to that particular file.

E-mail is being used more and more to exchange files that are more or less large, using its capacity to attach documents to E-mails. But, if the documents are relatively large, we can meet a number of problems (delayed delivery, rejection of message, problems in intermediate posts, long download time, etc., etc.) caused by the fact that the protocol used to send messages SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is not designed for transferring files, but to send text messages. Although the UAM post office is not very restrictive in terms of message size limits, many organisations have limits of 1 MB or less.

The protocol designed to transfer files is FTP (File Transfer Protocol), but although it is widely used to download software, information, etc., from public access servers, it is not used for exchanging files among small groups of people because, among other reasons, of the need to install an FTP server in the machine, configure it to be able to upload files and so that only a group of people may access them. Not simple tasks for users who only want to pass one or several documents from one person to another.

Therefore, we have a deficiency in Internet and in all TCP/IP protocols: the existence of a protocol and tools that use it that allow medium-large files to be exchanged easily among small groups of people.

FAQs

Who can use the Large File Exchange System (SEGA)?

Any person at UAM can use this system to share files with any group of people, from the University as well as from elsewhere. An essential requirement to use this system is to register with the Central Message Service and, therefore, have an E-mail address type name.surname@uam.es. UAM members should enter El Trastero via the Intranet or the page https://ficheros.uam.es.

People from outside the UAM and UAM students can also use the Large File Exchange System (SEGA), but they will do so as an anonymous user; therefore, there will be some options that they will not be able to use, such as file management, and they will only be able to share files with UAM staff. There is no possibility of students or people from outside UAM sharing files with people from elsewhere nor other students due to obvious reasons of limited available resources.

How does it work?

To use the Large File Exchange System (SEGA), you must provide a valid receiver E-mail address when including a file, as the system will send an E-mail to the recipients with a URL through which they can download the file.

People without a name.surname@uam.es account must enter the system as an anonymous user "Entra como anonimo/Login as anonymous".

Who can access my files?

Only those people indicated by you can access your files, the system will send them an E-mail with the URL to download the file.

How many files can I include?

The number of files you can include varies depending on: whether you are an UAM employee or from elsewhere and the space available in the Large File Exchange System (SEGA).

UAM staff have 1G of space, with a maximum upload capacity of 500 MB per file. Once logged in, UAM staff can see the "Total Quota" they have and the "Space Used".

Non UAM staff have a maximum upload capacity of 500 MB.

What is the maximum file size I can include?

The maximum file size varies depending on: whether you are an UAM employee or not, the space used by other files, and the space available in the Large File Exchange System (SEGA), etc.

UAM staff have 1G of space, with a maximum upload capacity of 500 MB per file. Once logged in, the UAM user can see the "Total Quota" they have and the "Space Used". UAM staff can free space by eliminating existing files by using the link "File Management".

Non UAM staff have a maximum upload capacity of 500 MB.

Exceptionally, if you need to upload a larger file, you can request a temporary extension by writing to cau@uam.es

How long can I leave my files?

The time that you can leave files varies depending on: whether you are an UAM employee or not and the space available in the Large File Exchange System (SEGA). UAM staff can leave the files for a maximum of 15 days, and non UAM staff can leave files for 7 days.
