Investigación en la Facultad

Research in the Science Faculty

The Science Faculty of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is a a reference centre, at both national and international level. There are a number of quality indicators which show this: the number and amount of financed projects, publications, patents, grants, the number of doctoral theses, the qualifications of the teaching staff, etc. One example is that, during 2008, the Science Faculty was responsible for more than 60% of the competitive research projects which were carried out at the UAM, while it was also responsible for approximately 70% of the patents currently in force. A high number of young researchers are trained at this Faculty, fact which is demonstrated by the number of doctoral theses read each year. These amount to over 225 each year, which supposes approximately 50% of the theses defended at the UAM. At the beginning of the 2009-10 academic year, 249 persons were receiving grants or were contracted in order to write doctoral theses at the Faculty. This is a reliable indicator of the potential our centre has for the training of new researchers.

This broad spectrum of activity is the fruit of the ceaseless efforts of a teaching staff which is highly committed to research,in addition to the unquestionable quality of their teaching confirmed by the amount and relevance of their scientific contributions. The research groups composed by the staff of the Science Faculty is structured in 16 Departments which work in the areas of Biology, Ecology, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, among others. In many of these areas, the research groups in the faculty are unquestionable research leaders in Spain, and they are undoubtedly on a level with the main reference research centres in Europe and the United States.
Testimony of the quality of the research in the ScienceFaculty has been given by the following recent Nobel Prize winners in Physics: (Sheldon Glashow and Martinus Veltman), Chemistry (John Walker) and Mathematics (Charles Fefferman).
The extensive research activity at the Science Faculty has contributed to the  UAM being one of the few Spanish Universities which is among the 100 best European Universities in research.
In addition, research in the Faculty supported by the Centres of the Higher Council for Scientific Research integrated into the Campus of the UAM, constitutes one of the basic pillars of the new UAM-CSIC International Excellence Campus and of the strategic development of the UAM in 2010-2015 (http://campusexcelenciauam.es/).
One key aspect in the development of the new UAM-CSIC campus is the addition of several institutions of excellence which provide value, increase the critical mass and enrich the project. This addition takes place at several levels, especially in the academic – research nature of the Science Faculty which is made up of the following:

  • The Departments of the Faculty.
  • The institutions of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and mixed UAM-CSIC in related areas.
  • The Madrid Institute of Advanced Studies (IMDEAs) in Nanoscience and Food.
  • The National Centre of Oncology Research (CNIO) and Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) and the Energy, Environmental and Technological Centre (CIEMAT)

Finally, constant collaboration with other public research organisms, as well as the substantial still growing amount of research work with companies, contribute tom consolidating the Science Faculty as an obligatory and important reference centre in all these areas.
