Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) industry has experienced unprecedented growth in the recent years. Commercial module prices are dropping fast and PV has already reached grid parity in many places beginning a new era of consumer-driven renewable energy. The cost of the solar cell has become insignificant in comparison to the total balance of systems dominated by installation and other costs. As crystalline silicon and established thin film technologies such as CIGS and CdTe already asymptote towards their practical limits new paths for efficiency improvement are needed to reduce the system cost further. Tandem solar cells are the most realistic path to go beyond the single junction limitations. We review the recent developments and outlook in the field of planar tandem photovoltaic devices, including IBM’s pioneering monolithic chalcogenide-perovskite tandem cells. Recent record results with stable high-bandgap selenium devices and their prospects for tandem and other novel applications will be discussed.
