Master in International Economics (MIE)

The Master´s Degree in International Economics at the Autonomous University of Madrid (MIE-UAM) offers a modern and high-quality training aimed to prepare students to work in the field of international economic analysis. The main objective is to train professionals who may develop their careers in national and international economic organizations, departments of economic analysis, consulting firms and economic research centres. We place special emphasis on the development of quantitative skills and on covering with rigor the main areas of international economics. Teaching is in English. In addition, the Master gives access to the  UAM's Doctoral Programme in Economics and Business.

The MIE-UAM consists of 60 ECTS credits and is taught during three terms. Teaching takes place in the morning during the first two terms and in the afternoons during the third term. In this third term students also write a master thesis (6 ECTS) and choose between doing internships in leading private and public institutions (see details below) or enrolling in the course Introduction to Research Techniques (6 ECTS each option). For more information, see the following document in  Spanish or English and the documents available on this site.

The Programme is managed by the Department of Economic Analysis: Economic Theory and Economic History at the UAM, where classes are held.

Admission process:

  • Background knowledge: The Master in International Economics is competitive and only around a fifth of all applicants are admitted to the programme. In general, we require very good grades in theoretical and quantitative courses at the undergraduate level (especially in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics).
  • English: To be admitted, students need to have a CEFR level of at least B2. For example, the minimum IELTS test score is 5.5 and the minimum TOEFL iBT test score 72. The Centre of Postgraduate Studies of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid can provide more information on the certificates that are accepted.
  • Choice of professional or research track: The choice between the professional and the research track is revocable; that is, the student who is admitted to the programme can change his choice once the programme has started. Students in the professional track do an internship in an institution or firm at the end of the master and students in the research track follow a course on methods of economic investigation and write a longer master thesis (which they also have to defend before a tribunal).
