The Physicists Peter Higgs (UK) and Francois Englert (Belgium) together with the CERN Laboratory have been awarded with the Principe de Asturias price for scientific research in 2013.

The two physicists Peter Higgs and Francois Englert (the latter along with Robert Brout, already passed away) concurrently and independently formulated in 1964 the existence of the subatomic particle in the origin of the mass of other particles, which has become known as the “Higgs boson”.

Nearly 50 years later, on July the 4th, 2012, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) confirmed the existence of this particle via experimentation in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The measurement was performed by the two general purpose experiments, ATLAS and CMS, independently.
There is a group of scientists at UAM  who belong to the Department of Theoretical Physics, who have participated in both ATLAS and CMS experiments. Four professors belong to the ATLAS Collaboration, namely:  Fernando Barreiro, Claudia Glasman, Jose del Peso and Juan Terron. Two professors belong to the CMS Collaboration, namely: Carmen Albajar and Jorge Fernandez de Troconiz. These scientists have contributed to the construction and operation of the detectors as well as to the analysis of the data; both activities directly related with the discovery of the Higgs particle.
