This seminar is intended as an introduction to the study of social distinction processes associated with learning English in Spain today. The seminar will be structured around the results of the ENIFALPO research project (2020-2024), which investigated the strategies used by middle- and upper-middle-class families to ensure that their children achieve a “very good level of English.” It will reflect on the social and cultural imaginaries associated with language immersion and will also introduce the field of study of family language policies (FLP) and the possibilities (and limitations) it offers. During the seminar, participants will be encouraged to actively participate in processes of reflection on the discourses and linguistic ideologies associated with the English language in Spain and globally, as well as in relation to the analysis and triangulation of ethnographic data.
