Seminario “Lexical and discursive polarizing strategies in Spanish electoral manifestos”

The seminar will focus on the analysis of polarization in Spanish election manifestos for the general election in 2023. The analysis is two-fold: qualitative and quantitative. After reviewing general concepts and methodological aspects, Cuenca will focus on (i) the discourse strategies of each of the six parties analyzed (3 left-wing parties, Sumar, PSOE, ERC, and 3 right-wing parties, PP, VOX, Junts) and (ii) a lexicometric analysis. The latter will be illustrated considering two outstanding foci of polarization in Spain: territorial organization and feminism. A case study proposed to the students will try to show to what extent the lexicon reveals ideology and polarization.
