The The Department of Mathematics carries out intense research in Mathematics and is widely recognized by the international scientific community.
The Department is among the top 75 in the world as ranked by the renowned Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Its faculty members teach courses in 11 different undergraduate degrees:

  • Telecommunications Engineering
  • Biochemistry

  • Human Nutrition and Dietetics

 

The Postgraduate studies at the Department include the Master in Mathematics and its Applications, the Ph. D. program, the joint Master in Mathematics and Computer Science, and the Master for High School Teachers. The Mathematics Graduate Program has received the “recognition of quality”, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Science. Additionally, it has been ranked by the CHE Excellence Ranking among the 20 best in Mathematics in Europe.

In the sphere of international relations, the Department has student exchange agreements with several European universities, as well as with universities in the United States and Latin America. In particular, within the ERASMUS program, we have bilateral agreements with approximately 40 European universities.

The members of the Department are often involved in the organization of numerous conferences, seminars and other events, some of which have prestigious international renown. They also collaborate with other universities, institutions and mathematics societies (RSME, SEMA, SEIO), and with the Institute of Mathematical Science (ICMAT, Joint Institute CSIC-UAM-UCIIIM-UCM) which is located in the UAM campus.

Lastly, the Department of Mathematics organizes and collaborates with other institutions in activities directed towards the teaching of mathematics to secondary students such as ESTALMAT (Stimulating Mathematics Talents), the Science Week. and annually awards prizes for students in secondary education. "The Hoja Volante" (Flying Leaf) magazine on popularization of mathematics, created by the Department in 2002, received the 2007 First Science in Action Award in the area of Science popularization Works on Paper.
