Summer School “European and Comparative Law”

What is it?

The Summer School "European and Comparative Law" is a course with introductory contents related to the European and international legal and political reality, with emphasis on current issues.

Program

The course is structured in eight modules. Each module is taught by one or two professors from the UAM Law School and consists of eight hours of virtual face-to-face classes. During the sessions, an introduction to a general topic will be given and a related national or international current affairs topic will be presented, and some exercises will be carried out. In some cases, other activities related to the issues will be carried out during the sessions, such as simulations, debates or the projection of some audiovisual materials that will be discussed during the class.

The following topics will be addressed:

• Intellectual Property Rights: a European overview (Profs. Gemma Minero Alejandre y Sebastián López Maza).
• International Human Rights Courts and Democratic Governance (Prof. Mariano Melero de la Torre).
• The International Protection of Cultural Heritage (Prof. Vanesa Menéndez Montero).
• The Right to Education in Liberal Democracies (Prof. Fernando de los Santos Menéndez).
• The Influence of the ECtHR Case Law on the Principles of Criminal Law (Prof. Marina Mínguez Rosique).
• European Consumer Law (Prof. Alicia Agüero Ortiz).
• New Trends on International and European Taxation for Multinational Enterprises (Profs. Domingo Jesús Jiménez-Valladolid de L’Hotellerie-Fallois y Félix Daniel Martínez Laguna).
• European Criminal Law (Profs. Rut Lopera Viñé y Ana Belén Valverde Cano).

Dates, schedule and venue

• Dates: from June 26 to July 21, 2023.
• Schedule: Monday to Thursday, from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 11:30 to 13:30 (the final exam of all modules will be held on Friday, July 21).
• Location: synchronous face-to-face classes through Microsoft Teams.

Pre-requisites for admission

The school is aimed at Law students (or students of double degrees in which one is Law) who have a sufficient knowledge of English to follow and participate in the courses. A B2 level is recommended.

Evaluation Criteria

For each module, students will take a multiple-choice test in class on the topics covered and expanded in the materials provided by the professors. The professors of each module will define at the beginning of each module the possible topics on which the exam will be based. The tests will take place on Friday, April 21 through Moodle. The exam for each module will last between 15-20 minutes. The grade will be numerical.

 

The final grade will be the result of the sum of the following elements:

• Class attendance: 10%. It is essential to attend 80% of the sessions.
• Continuous evaluation (active participation in class and presentation of practical cases): 20%.
• Final exam of each module: 70%.

Registration

• Cost: 650 € (regular registration) and 585 € (registration Alumni UAM, Alumnos UAM and Amigos de la UAM). To benefit from the reduced registration fee, students must register with their institutional email (@estudiante.uam.es).

• Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded 3 ECTS.

Applicable criteria:

• Unemployed status: 40%.
• Socio-economic situation: 30%.
• Academic record: 30%.
