This talk presents several research projects in Biomedical Engineering which share only a similarity: they have been defined to solve a specific clinical need which, if addressed, may have a profound impact in global health. The first project named mPET, pursues enabling clinical Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners to image simultaneously several biological processes. This technology would offer unprecedented capabilities for better tailoring cancer treatments to specific patients, early assessment of therapy response and better diagnosis and staging in oncology. The second project is focused on the development of the QuickSee, a low-cost device to easily obtain eyeglasses prescriptions with minimally-trained personnel in developing countries. Of the estimated 2.5 billion who see poorly and do not correct their sight, over a billion people lack access to eyeglasses. This results in a high prevalence of uncorrected refractive error which is a major cause of global disability and has an enormous impact on productivity, education, and overall quality of life for those afflicted. Finally, Dr. Lage will talk about The SimVis project which is developing the most advanced technology for prescribing multifocal lens correction. This technology allows for first time patients experience the real world with multiple multifocal correction before cataract or refractive surgery, or contact lens fitting.
