Department of Biochemistry

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry!

The Department of Biochemistry at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is part of the combined Autónoma University-Spanish Council for Scientific Research (UAM-CSIC) centre and the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols (Alberto Sols Biomedical Research Institute). The CSIC-UAM agreement allows the department, on the one hand, to run a wide range of teaching activities in the Faculty and the University and, on the other, to be involved in the research dynamics of one of the CSIC centres at the forefront of biomedical research, participating fully in its organization and management, and contributing to its development.

The Department of Biochemistry participates in the teaching components of three degree programmes (Medicine, Biochemistry, Human Nutrition and Dietetics), imparting a total of 19 subjects to more than 900 students. In conjunction with the Department of Molecular Biology, it also runs the postgraduate programme in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedicine and Biotechnology (Molecular Biosciences) which includes coordinating and teaching three Master’s degrees (Molecular and Cell Biology, Molecular Biomedicine and Biotechnology) and one doctorate programme. The doctorate programme has received the Ministry of Education and Science’s Mention of Excellence (Ref. MEE 2011-0504; Resolution 6.10.2011).

In conjunction with the IIBM (Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols), it is also involved in the practical and theoretical training of students, both graduates and doctors, running work experience placements at the UAM-CSIC combined centre.

The department currently has 27 teachers (9 professors, 12 lecturers, 2 temporary lecturers in possession of PhDs, 1 Emeritus professor, 2 associate lecturers & 2 Ramón y Cajal lecturers) in its staff, included in the UAM-CSIC combined centre together with 44 CSIC researchers, 77 research support technicians and more than 200 students holding postgraduate and postdoctoral studentships. The UAM-CSIC has an important role in the world of science, with more than 50 lines of cutting-edge research in the most recent areas of interest.
