Resumen curriculum vitae

Luis Miguel Garcia Segura is Research Professor in the Cajal Institute of the CSIC. Main scientific interest: neuroactive steroid actions, especially estradiol, in cerebral function, protection and repair. Main contributions: (1). Gonadal hormones regulate synaptic plasticity. (2). Glial cells are involved in the mechanisms of action of these hormones. (3). Estradiol promotes neuronal survival and expression of anti-apoptotic molecules such as Bcl-2. (4). The IGF- I receptors and their signaling pathways are involved in the neuroprotective mechanisms of estradiol. (5). In neurodegeneration conditions the enzyme that produces estradiol is expressed in astrocytes and increases the local estradiol synthesis in the brain. (6). Estradiol production in the brain is an endogenous neuroprotective mechanism. (7). Drugs that increase the synthesis of neuroactive steroids in the nervous system are neuroprotective. (8). Some ERs selective modulators (SERMs) are neuroprotective and reduce inflammation in the CNS.
