Description and objectives

The University Master’s Degree in Quantitative Economic Analysis is designed to provide students with quality training in order to promote the start of research activities and employment in the field of economic analysis, with special emphasis on the learning and application of quantitative methods that are in most wide demand today, and placing special attention on the new approaches that will pave the future of economic and financial analysis in the coming years.

This Master's Degree considers two complementary student profiles: research and professional. The new program can train researchers who wish to further their studies on doctoral programs in Economy and similar fields, and also highly qualified professionals capable of covering a wide range of posts in economic and financial analysis department in private or public entities.

Student profiles

This Master's Degree mainly targets students who have graduated from degrees in Economy, Business Administration, Economy and Finance and other similar areas. Nevertheless, the program is designed to be attractive for graduates from other areas involving analysis, such as Engineering, Physics or Mathematics, who wish to further their academic or professional careers in the field of economic analysis.

Programs and Teaching Guides for Subjects

Curriculum information

This University Master’s Degree in Quantitative Economic Analysis takes one year to complete and consists of 60 ECTS, designed for researcher and professional profiles.

During the first quarter, the student will take a block of mandatory courses (22 ECTS). In the second quarter (20 ECTS), the student must complete 16 ECTS of mandatory courses and 4 ECTS corresponding to an elective course chosen from three options. In the third quarter, the student must choose either an internship in companies if following the professional track or two courses if following the research track, totaling 6 ECTS.

For the research track, the student will take two elective courses from the following two blocks:

Block 1: Stochastic Topics in Quantitative Methods

Choose one course from:

33451 Stochastic Calculus and Quantitative Finance

Block 2: Other topics

Choose one course from:

33452 Topics in Economics

For the professional track, the student will engage in a module of professional external internships, totaling 6 ECTS. The contents and tasks of the internships should include a formative component aligned with the master's program objectives.

In both profiles, the remaining 12 ECTS to complete the 60 ECTS required for the degree will be obtained through the development and public defense of the Master's Thesis.

Notice

In accordance with the agreements by UAM’s Postgraduate Studies Committee, any optional subjects on which less than five students are registered, may not go ahead. The students affected by this situation will be informed accordingly so that they can register on other subjects.

The choice of optional subjects may vary slightly before the start of the classes due to adjustments to the Master's Degree teaching schedule, in which case students will be informed accordingly.

Activities of interest

The program provides intensive training in data science techniques to perform high quality analyses in the field of economics. Seminars with national and international experts and academics in different fields are also held. Students will also have the chance to spend time at other universities, which is expected to have a positive effect on their academic and professional performance.

Destinations for curricular internships

The program provides students with the possibility of internships in businesses or institutions. UAM has an office with wide experience which is in charge of signing collaboration agreements for hundreds of students each year.

Furthermore, the Master's Degree program is highly experienced in managing internships. The former Master's Degree in International Economy, which gave rise to this new program, offered students internships at leading national and international institutions, such as AIReF, BBVA Research, National Economic and Social Research Institute, etc.

Research centers

This Master's Degree offers students the possibility of international mobility, meaning they will be able to spend time at foreign universities. Furthermore, UAM recently joined the Civis Consortium, a network of eight European universities whose objectives include full mobility of students between the member institutions.

The application for admission to the Master's program is done electronically through our on-line admissions application. Before starting the admission process it is advisable to consult the following information and follow the instructions described in Admission step by step:

Specific admission requirements

Among other tasks, the Master's Degree Academic Committee is in charge of the selection and admission process of applicants, taking the following specific selection criteria into account:

A degree in Economics, Business Administration and Management, Economics and Finance or other similar qualifications with a solid base in subjects of Economic Theory, Econometrics and Mathematics, or degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Engineering.

A minimum of B2 level English (recognized within the new Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) or equivalent. The equivalence table used regarding the different certificates can be seen in the downloads section.

Documents to attach to applications

Mandatory documents:

Academic certificate of degree study qualifications (1).
Declaration of average grade (mandatory for non-UAM students) (2).
Official certificate accrediting a minimum of B2 level English (recognized within the new Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) or equivalent.
Curriculum Vitae, stating any complementary training and/or professional experience in the required qualifications.
Access Degree: If you have completed your studies at the time of applying for the master's degree, you must attach the degree certificate/diploma, bachelor's degree, or equivalent (or proof of having applied for the degree) in the application.

(1) The academic transcript must be translated if it is not in the Spanish language. It will not be necessary to translate documents if they are in English, French, Italian or Portuguese.

In the case of having taken Master’s/Doctoral studies, we recommend including them as additional documents to your application.

(2) If you have studied in Spain, you should attach a Certificate showing the average grade (on a scale of 0 to 10). If you have already studied at UAM, you will not need to submit this certificate.

If you have studied outside of Spain, you will need to submit the average grade equivalence issued by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (see section “related links”).

The Academic Committee will also consider personal interviews in any cases when such are considered appropriate.

Other requirements for students with non-EU qualifications

When you have been notified about your acceptance on the Master's Degree, and your acceptance is based on a university qualification issued by a higher education institution not belonging to the EHEA, you will need to legalize the qualification via diplomatic channels in order to formalize registration, or by means of a “Hague Convention Apostille”.

Why study this Master's Degree at UAM?

This new program aims to fill the gap in the current picture, by the combining classical training of a standard Economic Analysis program with a strategic focus on the knowledge and application of new data analysis paradigms related to big data and machine learning processes applied to economic and financial problems. The program therefore gives considerable importance to the quantitative approaches applied by most institutions today, centered on macro and micro economic analysis.

Information about Job Placement for Graduates

Students who take this Master's Degree may later continue their studies in doctoral programs in Economics and related fields but can also start work with specific skills to undertake expert posts in quantitative economic analysis in private companies or public institutions (central banks, government organizations, European Commission, etc.).

The University Master's degrees are regulated by Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the quality assurance procedure. They have official status and validity throughout the national territory, confer full academic effects, grant access to the Doctorate, and, if applicable, qualify for the performance of regulated professional activities, in accordance with the regulations applicable in each case.
