Description and Objectives

The Master's Degree in the Iberian Medieval World: Hispania, al-Andalus, and Sepharad is an innovative proposal promoted by the Universities of Malaga and Autonomous of Madrid. It aims to deepen knowledge and research methods related to the medieval Iberian world.

This Master's program seeks to provide students with a high degree of specialization in the history of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages from a multicultural perspective. The objective is to offer an integrated understanding of the Christian, Islamic, and Jewish past of the Peninsula, exploring their continuities, changes, and interactions. It does so within the framework of a space of encounter and conflict that has given rise to historiographical images such as the myth of al-Andalus, the Spain of the three cultures, or the Reconquista.

This approach is carried out from a multidisciplinary point of view, offering students a broad perspective on the complexity and richness of Iberian societies from Late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. It involves an autonomous analysis of various political, social, economic, artistic, and cultural realities that took shape on the Peninsula, also within a European and Mediterranean context.

This Master's program is generally intended for graduates in the fields of Arts and Humanities, particularly those with degrees in History and Art History, and related disciplines. However, the Master's is of interest to individuals from other academic backgrounds who are interested in gaining knowledge about our historical past. It is designed to provide specialized training that qualifies them for high-quality teaching and research in both university and non-university settings. Additionally, it prepares them for positions in public or private institutions and companies, making it suitable for a broader audience beyond those with specific degrees in History or Art History.

Trabajo de Fin de Máster

Module 1, mandatory in nature, integrates, at a specialized level, the essential contents for the training of students in the field of Medieval Studies in the Iberian world. Its only subject, "Foundations and Methods," includes five courses aimed at providing methodological and theoretical content, focusing especially on contributions from History, Historiographical Sciences and Techniques, and Art. The goal is to offer students an articulated presentation of the main methodological foundations, research trends in various areas (power, society, economy, art, culture...), and the applications that new technologies can contribute to improving the analysis of medieval studies. It also seeks to provide students with information on the main instruments, methods, analysis techniques, treatment of sources, and major artistic manifestations. Additionally, the intention is to expose students to the most modern historiographical and interpretative trends.

Module 2, optional in nature, consists of four different subjects. One of the most notable elements of this module is the significant level of optional courses it offers. The student must complete 18 ECTS. Interdisciplinarity and transversality constitute the second essential feature of this module, as seen in its diverse programming. The quantitative and qualitative balance between the subjects is not strictly exact but is very high, so that the four subjects have similar entities and sizes. The four subjects in this module delve into different facets and areas of the Iberian medieval world: the relationships between groups of different religious creeds, the formation of different identities, dynamics, and power structures in the medieval world and their relationship with spatial frameworks, material and artistic culture, language, and materiality.

Module 3, mandatory in nature, involves the development and defense of the Master's Thesis, which corresponds to a workload of 12 ECTS credits and will have a research orientation.

In accordance with the agreements by UAM’s Postgraduate Studies Committee, any optional subjects on which less than five students are registered, may not go ahead. The students affected by this situation will be informed accordingly so that they can register on other subjects.

The choice of optional subjects may vary slightly before the start of the classes due to adjustments to the Master's Degree teaching schedule, in which case students will be informed accordingly.

Activities of interest

In addition to regular teaching, this Master's program offers conferences, seminars, and workshops that enable students to interact and engage in dialogue with national and international researchers. The interuniversity nature of the Master's program, within the framework of collaboration with the University of Malaga, provides students with the opportunity to connect with specialists associated with one of the main Andalusian universities, both in person, thanks to the UAM mobility program, and virtually, through synchronous and interactive teaching (bimodal). This allows students to take courses taught outside their centers of origin, enriching and expanding their educational perspectives.

-Acreditación de conocimiento del idioma español nivel B2 [Obligatorio unicamente para estudiantes no hispanohablantes]

-Título de Acceso: En caso de haber finalizado tus estudios en el momento de realizar la solicitud de acceso al máster, debes adjuntar en la aplicación el título/diploma de grado, licenciatura, diplomatura o equivalente (o el resguardo de haber solicitado el título).

(1) El certificado académico debe estar traducido en caso de no estar redactado en castellano. No será requisito imprescindible la traducción de documentos que estén en: inglés, francés, italiano o portugués.

En caso de tener realizados estudios de Máster/Doctorado, es recomendable incluirlos como documentación complementaria en la solicitud.

(2) Si has realizado tus estudios en España deberás presentar una Certificación de nota media (con un baremo de 0 a 10). En el caso de que hayas cursado tus estudios en la UAM no es necesario presentarla.

Si has realizado los estudios fuera de España, deberás aportar la equivalencia de nota media emitida por el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. (Consultar enlace en el menú lateral)

Criterios de Admisión

Tendrán preferencia quienes acrediten una formación universitaria adecuada a los contenidos del programa. En esta línea se reconocen las siguientes preferencias:

Preferencia alta:

Graduado en Historia, Historia del Arte, Filología, Estudios Árabes e Islámicos, Estudios Árabes y Hebreos, Traducción, Historia y Ciencias de la Música, Geografía e Historia, y grados análogos.

Licenciado en Historia, Historia del Arte, Geografía e Historia, Geografía, Filología, y análogos.

Preferencia media:

Graduado en Filosofía, en Geografía, Sociología, Antropología, Ciencias Políticas, Relaciones internacionales, Gestión cultural y grados o licenciaturas análogos.

Resto de títulos vinculados a la rama de conocimiento de Arte y Humanidades. Resto de títulos vinculados a la rama de conocimiento de Ciencias Sociales.

Preferencia baja:

Resto de titulaciones universitarias

El procedimiento de acceso tendrá en cuenta las siguientes prioridades:

Si de la aplicación de este baremo no se desprendiese una selección determinada, se procederá a entrevistar personalmente a los candidatos.

Otros requisitos para estudiantes con títulos extracomunitarios

Una vez recibida la notificación de admisión al Máster, si has accedido con un título universitario expedido por una institución de educación superior perteneciente a un sistema educativo ajeno al EEES, para formalizar la matrícula, tendrás que presentar dicho título legalizado por vía diplomática o, en su caso, a través del trámite de legalización única o "apostilla del Convenio de La Haya".

Why Study this Master's at UAM?

This Master's program offers a thematic and interdisciplinary approach that is uncommon, thanks to its pluricultural orientation, focusing on the individualized study and an integrative perspective of the Christian, Islamic, and Jewish past of the Iberian Peninsula. This approach allows understanding the medieval Iberian context as an excellent laboratory for the knowledge of intercultural relations in a historical perspective, addressing fields such as religion, culture, war, or the frontier.

This Master's program involves the participation of prestigious specialists from different areas of knowledge (History, Art History, Historical Sciences and Techniques, Arabic and Islamic Studies, and Music), providing a comprehensive view of the Iberian medieval world and offering students a set of diverse methodological tools and research resources, including new technologies and ICT.

This approach is offered within the framework of an interuniversity Master's program that integrates teaching staff affiliated with the universities of Malaga and Autónoma de Madrid. This allows students to take courses taught by renowned specialists outside their home institution, ensuring the enrichment of the formative and research perspectives of the graduates through jointly planned teaching between both universities.

Completing this Master's program at the UAM will also provide advanced and specialized training for those who wish to develop a thesis within the Doctoral Program in Hispanic Studies: Language, Literature, History, and Thought, in which our faculty is integrated.
