Estudios del Mundo Antiguo

Programa de Doctorado en Estudios del Mundo Antiguo

The Doctoral Programme in Ancient World Studies-DIEMA is an official inter-faculty, inter-university and inter-disciplinary PhD programme in which the Complutense University and the Autonomous University of Madrid participate.

The programme was born in 2007 with the intention of promoting the training of new researchers in the field of Antiquity through the elaboration and presentation of a doctoral thesis, consisting of an original research work, and is an obligatory point of reference for all those interested (students, teachers and researchers) in the Ancient World.

Research lines

1. History of Antiquity
This line includes research on the Near East, Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome, in their various aspects, from the formation of the first territorial states (4th millennium BC) to the end of the so-called Lower Roman Empire.

2. Archaeology and Heritage
This line of research includes projects focused on archaeological methodology and issues, as well as on heritage as a substantial part of our cultural ecosystem, with the aim of satisfying the training and professional aspirations of doctoral students in these fields.

3. Greek Philology and Indo-European Studies
This line is made up of two large scientific blocks: on the one hand, Classical Philology studies (linguistics, literature and philology of the Greek language in its different historical periods), and on the other, Indo-European studies (comparative analysis of the different families of Indo-European languages).

4. Latin philology
This line includes studies related not only to Latin language and literature during antiquity, but also to the analysis of the manuscript tradition, mainly through the medieval and modern periods.

5. Classical Tradition and Survival
This line studies all aspects of the survival of the Ancient World in its various cultural and scientific manifestations (iconography, literature, mentality), from Late Antiquity and especially during the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
