The Biology Department is located in the Biology Building and brings together more than 150 teachers and researchers who cover the following fields:

  • Anthropology
  • Cell Biology
  • Botany
  • Physiology
  • Plant Physiology
  • Genetics
  • Paleontology
  • Zoology

 

The Department teaches eight undergraduate degrees, concentrating on Biology and Environmental Science, and six official postgraduate degrees and is responsible for the Masters in Physical Anthropology, Biodiversity, Genetics and Cell Biology as well as the European Masters in Inland Water Quality with the University of Mälardalen in Sweden.
In addition to its teaching activities, the Department conducts intense research along multiple lines. In accordance with its multidisciplinary nature that encompasses eight fields of knowledge, this research is very diverse. It ranges from studies on basic science that include evolution as an integral element of biology, to research with applications in multiple fields ranging from Nature Conservation to Biotechnology and Biomedicine. These research activities are possible thanks to funding from European, national, Comunidad de Madrid and UAM projects, and are carried out in collaboration with numerous Spanish and foreign universities and research centres.
