Department Website

The Department of Ecology of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid was established in 1976 by Professor Fernando González Bernáldez. Since its inception, the Department has worked in basic and applied research and has participated in many pioneering studies in Spain on Urban/Rural Planning, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Management and Conservation of Protected Areas and Natural Resources.

Currently the Department of Ecology teaches undergraduate degrees in Biology and Environmental Science and Masters in Ecology (verified by the ANECA), the latter in conjunction with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The Department also provides teaching for the Official European Postgraduate Programme for the Masters in Inland Waters Quality and participates in the Masters in Microbiology taught by the Department of Molecular Biology of this University.

The research lines are based primarily on four research groups recognised by the UAM:

  • Ecology and Conservation of Terrestrial Ecosystems (eleven teachers)
  • Ecology, the Environment and Society (five teachers)
  • Aquatic Ecology (three teachers)
  • Microbial Ecology (two teachers)

The objectives of the research lines currently being conducted by these groups, as well as other research lines not associated with these groups, can be viewed at the link: Research Groups.
