Introduction

Welcome to the UAM Department of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Microbiology!

The UAM Department of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Microbiology started teaching in the 1970/71 academic year, the same year that the first band of students at the Faculty of Medicine entered their third year of studies.

Currently, the department provides specific undergraduate teaching in 21 subjects in the areas of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Microbiology and Parasitology to more than 800 students studying for the following degrees: Medicine, Nursing, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Food Sciences.

The department also organises the postgraduate programme in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, which includes the Master’s degree in Quantitative Research Methods in Epidemiology and the doctorate programme in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. It is also involved in the postgraduate programme, Interdepartmental Master’s in Microbiology, which includes the Master’s degrees and doctorates in Microbiology.

The members of the department work in different areas of research related to the various fields of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Microbiology and Parasitology. On the link “Lines of Research” the different scientific activities can be found, as well as the researchers working in each area.
