The fields researched in the Faculty cover nearly all areas of the economy and business. The following list gives the most important ones but is in no way exhaustive: geographical and sectorial analysis of the economy, accounting, demographics, economic development, econometrics, public sector economics, international economics, finance, taxation and fiscal policy, history of economic thought, macroeconomics, marketing, the labour market, quantitative methods, microeconomics, modelling, entrepreneurial organization, planning, monetary policy, economic prediction, market regulation, economic systems and sociology. Each Department maintains a section of its webpage devoted to the teaching and research faculty, detailing each professor’s areas of specialization.

Research projects are conducted both by individuals and by teams. The teams may be formed in departments, research centres (such as the Instituto L.R. Klein) or research groups (roughly thirty of these have been recognized by the UAM). The research performed in the Faculty is increasingly interdisciplinary, most notably in the Social Sciences and in Law. Thus, the traditional orientation to local socio-economic phenomena is giving way to research on international phenomena, increasingly performed with the collaboration of researchers from several countries.

To finance their research, the teams’ members obtain funding through competitive calls for projects and through contracts signed under Article 83 of the Ley Orgánica de Universidades. The amount generated by these contracts is usually triple that achieved through competitive grants. About a hundred projects and contracts are managed in the Faculty every year, totalling approximately two million Euros.
