TÍTULO DEL PROYECTO: Polarización y Discursos Digitales: Perspectivas Críticas y Socio-Cognitivas

ENTIDAD FINANCIADORA: MECPI2020-119102RB-100.

INVESTIGADORA PRINCIPAL: Manuela Romano

INVESTIGADORA PRINCIPAL: Margarita Vinagre

OTROS INVESTIGADORES DEL DEPARTAMENTO: Avelino Corral

This project aims to analyse and assess the effects that integrating virtual EXCHANGE (telecollaboration) as an innovative teaching-learning method in the classroom (blended-learning) can have on the development of key competences for lifelong learning (European Comission, 2007; 2018) of undergraduate students in  EMI classrooms in Higher Education. This analysis is being carried out by two main interdisciplinary and transnational teams: one group of researchers who specialize in the fields of Educational Technologies and English Studies from the Universities Autónoma de Madrid, Navarre, Alcalá, Politécnica de Madrid, Valencia and Politécnica de Valencia in Spain and another group of researchers who specialize in the field of Educational Technologies and Foreign Languages from the Universities of Limerick, Dublin (Ireland), Aix Marseille, Clermont Auvergne (France), Hawaii (Manoa), Maryland, and New York (USA).

TÍTULO DEL PROYECTO: Gender and Pathography from a Transnational Perspective

ENTIDAD FINANCIADORA: Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation PID2020-113330-GBI00

INVESTIGADORA PRINCIPAL: Isabel Durán (UCM)

OTROS INVESTIGADORES DEL DEPARTAMENTO: Noelia Hernando

The “Medical Humanities” is an interdisciplinary area of knowledge which explores human health and disease through the methods and materials of the creative arts and humanities. It responds to the imperative of understanding the experience of “being ill” through a wide spectrum of physical and mental maladies, as reflected in literature and other artistic expressions. The research group “Gender Studies in English-Speaking Countries” at UCM envisions to employ its consolidated expertise in the fields of gender, transnational and literary studies to explore stories of illness as (auto)pathographies, which complement a patient’s medical history, protest against injustices from the medical profession and global health systems and strengthen the healing purpose inherent in the act of writing, as “scriptotherapy”. To facilitate the investigation of (auto) pathographies in conjunction with gender and transnationality, this Research Project and its members are divided into four clusters: stories of bodily conditions, stories of psychic suffering, stories of sex- and sexuality-related occurrences, and stories of treatment and illness-related spaces.

This research group’s case studies include but are not limited to examining illness stories of restitution, chaos, quest and patients’ confrontation with death, as well as illness-related myths and metaphors, such as rebirth, battle, the amazon, or medical colonialization. This project’s overarching goal is to scrutinize key questions, themes and narrative strategies from the four axes of the already-mentioned clusters (the physical, the mental, the sexual and the spatial), in order to have diagnostic knowledge of several life episodes: being physically or mentally ill, interacting with healthcare professionals, being treated in hospitals and other health institutions, and being traditionally stigmatized for gendered pathologies.

TÍTULO DEL PROYECTO: Sistema inteligente multimodal basado en crowdsensing para un servicio de predicción de problemas sociales (ALLEGRO) / Smart multi-modal crowdsensing-based system as a service oriented to the prediction of social problems (ALLEGRO)

Social-media tools have become a global phenomenon of communication, where users post content in the form of text, images, video, audio or a combination of them to convey their opinions, report facts that are happening at that time or show situations of interest. A current line of research related to these tools consists in crowdsensing, i.e. the analysis and interpretation of the huge amount of information that is daily posted in these tools. Within this context, this project proposes the development of ALLEGRO (Adaptive muLti-domain sociaL-media sEnsinG fRamewOrk), a smart multi-modal system (i.e. text, audio, and image) for the analysis and fusion of information posted on social networks. This system is comprised of different interconnected analysis modules, where efficient machine-learning techniques will be applied to both the extraction of the most significant features and the increase of contextual information from posts. With the purpose of evaluating the ALLEGRO architecture, we aim to implement a social-sensing prototype for the smart-city framework. In this regard, we take an integral approach to the concept of "smart city", where we focus not only on detecting problems related to the quality of the infrastructure and services provided to citizens (e.g. healthcare, lighting, and transportation, among others) but also on analysing the sociological dimension of the city, which is reflected through people's concerns (e.g. racial conflicts, unemployment, and violence, just to name a few). Therefore, we aim to develop a “Social-Sensing as-a-service” system that could deal with issues that do not contribute to improving well-being and quality of life.

TÍTULO DEL PROYECTO: Integrating language and knowledge building through video-enhanced observation in English-medium instruction (EMI)

ENTIDAD FINANCIADORA: Proyecto Beatriz Galindo SI2/PBG/2020-00009

INVESTIGADOR PRINCIPAL: Tom Morton.

OTROS INVESTIGADORES DEL DEPARTAMENTO: Ana Llinares

The aim of this project is to enable lecturers in EMI programmes to gain a greater awareness of the role of language and communication in the teaching and learning of their disciplines and to use this awareness to increase the effectiveness of their instructional practices through a deeper integration of language and pedagogy. The project uses Legitimation Code Theory (LCT), which is a framework for exploring the underlying principles, or ‘codes’ that generate different knowledge practices. In the first stage of the project, lecturers in different disciplines collaborate with the research team to identify the different ‘codes’ underlying their practices, through interviews and video observation of face to face and/or online teaching, and these codes are related to the use of English across three ‘dimensions’ of LCT: Specialization, Semantics, and Autonomy. In the second phase of the project, the findings from the first phase are applied to a video-observation tool (VEO) which allows lecturers to ‘tag’ segments of their teaching with a user-friendly language of description and share these ‘tagged’ segments with colleagues in collaborative dialogue. This process will enable lecturers to achieve deeper awareness of how they use English in their knowledge-building practices and use this knowledge to improve the effectiveness of their teaching.
