Augmenting Reflection with Human-Centred AI: Learning Analytics in Complex Healthcare Simulations

Resumen/Abstract

This talk explores how emerging AI technologies, particularly large language models (LLMs), are reshaping reflective practices in education. Reflection is essential for deep learning, critical thinking, and knowledge transfer, yet AI challenges us to reconsider what skills and strategies are most relevant in the Age of AI. At the same time, it introduces new concerns around integrity and appropriate use. Drawing on cutting-edge research and practical applications, this talk demonstrates how human-centred learning analytics and generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, DALL·E, Midjourney) can meaningfully support reflection and learning. Special focus will be given to real-world examples from immersive, embodied healthcare simulations, showing how AI and multimodal analytics are being used to augment complex learning and debriefing experiences in high-stakes environments.

Dr Roberto Martínez-Maldonado is an Associate Professor in Learning Analytics and AI in Education and Co-Director of the Centre for Learning Analytics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His work advances understanding of the socio-material dimensions of AI use in education, promoting human-centred and more-than-human methodologies for creating learning analytics interfaces with integrity. Dr Martínez-Maldonado explores authentic learning environments through multimodal technologies and data-intensive computational systems, evaluating dynamic activities such as teamwork in clinical and emergency scenarios. He currently leads two Australian Research Council–funded projects preparing learners and teachers for the era of AI and to develop feedback literacies. He has served as Program Chair for international conferences including the International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge and the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education. He also regularly serves as an Associate Chair on the Learning and Education subcommittee of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, and is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education and the Journal of Learning Analytics.
