Augmenting Reflection with Human-Centred AI: Learning Analytics in Complex Healthcare Simulations

Resumen/Abstract

This talk explores how emerging AI technologies, particularly large language models (LLMs), are reshaping reflective practices in education. Reflection is essential for deep learning, critical thinking, and knowledge transfer, yet AI challenges us to reconsider what skills and strategies are most relevant in the Age of AI. At the same time, it introduces new concerns around integrity and appropriate use. Drawing on cutting-edge research and practical applications, this talk demonstrates how human-centred learning analytics and generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, DALL·E, Midjourney) can meaningfully support reflection and learning. Special focus will be given to real-world examples from immersive, embodied healthcare simulations, showing how AI and multimodal analytics are being used to augment complex learning and debriefing experiences in high-stakes environments.

Curriculum ponente

Roberto Martinez-Maldonado is an Associate Professor in the Department of Data Science & AI at Monash University, Australia. His research lies at the intersection of Human-Centred AI in Education, Learning Analytics, Human-Computer Interaction, and collaborative learning, with a particular focus on understanding and supporting human interaction in physical learning spaces through sensing technologies, artificial intelligence, data visualisation, and data storytelling. He holds a PhD in Information Technologies from the University of Sydney (2014), specialising in Human-Computer Interaction and Educational Data Mining.

A significant part of his research career has focused on the development of Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA) to analyse learning and teamwork, including its application in educational and healthcare simulation settings. His recent contributions include research on MMLA deployments in real-world settings, multimodal analysis of collaborative work, and AI-based systems designed to support reflection on team performance. His research output includes more than 200 research outputs recorded by Monash University, and he has received several recognitions, including a Best Paper Award (2020) and awards for best full research papers.
