Research conducted in the Department of Applied Physics falls within the field of Science and Engineering of Advanced Materials. The Department has a strong research tradition in:

  • Materials for Optoelectronics
  • Nanostructured Materials
  • Space Materials
  • Photovoltaic Materials
  • Magnetic Materials
  • Biomaterials
  • Polymers


Research funding comes from National Projects, which include excellence programmes such as CONSOLIDER, European, Comunidad de Madrid and Universidad Autónoma programmes. The Department partipates in the teaching of undergraduate degrees in Physics and teaches optional courses in the Applied Physics syllabus. It also participates in the Polytechnic School and in teaching undergraduate courses in Chemistry. The Department's postgraduate programmes are especially noteworthy, particularly the Masters in Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology and the Masters in Energies and Fuels of the Future, with a wide range of courses and research groups for completing doctoral theses.
