The Research Activities carried out by the Department cover many areas:

  • Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics
  • Experimental Elementary Particle Physics
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Computational Astrophsyics
  • Galactic and Extragalactic Astrophsyics
  • Cosmology
  • Astroparticles
  • Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
  • Computational Neuroscience
  • History of Science

In addition to the permanent faculty, the Department has a large number of young professors and doctoral students as well as visiting researchers from other national and international institutions. The teaching activities of the department cover undergraduate degrees and postgraduate studies, mainly in Physics but also in various undergraduate courses in Chemistry and Biology.
At the postgraduate level, the Department is in charge of two Official Postgraduate Programmes in Theoretical Physics and Astrophsyics (interuniversity) and actively participates in Biophysics and Nuclear Physics (interuniversity) programmes, all of which have received awards for quality. At any given time, an average of thirty doctoral students are pursuing their doctoral theses in one of the Department's research fields.
The Department of Theorectical Physics maintains a close relationship with the CSIC Theorectical Physics Institute (IFT-CSIC) located on the university campus of Cantoblanco.
