Licenciado en Ciencias Geológicas por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y Doctor en Ciencias (Sección: Geológicas) por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Ha sido Becario FPI (1980-83) en la UCM y Profesor (Ayudante y Asociado) en la UAM hasta 1988. Desde 1988 es Profesor Titular del Área de Cristalografía y Mineralogía en la UAM. Ha sido director y secretario del Departamento de Química Agrícola, Geología y Geoquímica desde 1997 hasta 2004. Es Coordinador del grupo de investigación de la UAM C-144 “Geomateriales y Procesos Geológicos –GPG”.
Especialista en mineralogía, sedimentología y geoquímica de arcillas y minerales de la arcilla. Ha participado como investigador en 14 proyectos nacionales y uno internacional de financiación pública, en dos como investigador principal. Ha sido investigador responsable en alrededor de 90 contratos con empresas y dictámenes técnicos. Es autor o coautor de unas 240 publicaciones en revistas (140), libros (10) y capítulos de libros (90), destacando 50 artículos en revistas SCI, situadas predominantemente en el primer cuartil (Q1), y un índice h de 17.
Ha participado con contribuciones en 80 congresos de los cuales 49 han sido internacionales, en varios de ellos como miembro del comité organizador y/o científico. Ha participado en alrededor de 30 seminarios y cursos siendo director y organizador de varios de ellos.
Ha realizado estancias de investigación en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Italia, Francia, Brasil y Portugal. Ha dirigido cuatro tesis doctorales.
Director de la revista MACLA (2004-2006) publicada por la Sociedad Española de Mineralogía. Miembro del “Committee of Nomenclature” de la Clay Minerals Society (Chair: S. Guggenheim) en el periodo 2014-2017.
Coautor de cinco libros docentes relacionados con la mineralogía y la geología.
