Elsevier aims to provide researchers publishing open access in our journals with the best possible choice of license options. To support this goal, we have decided to launch a pilot project to experiment with a new re-use license, the Creative Commons Attribution- Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC) for a selective list of journals from March, 2022.

The CC BY-NC license, like the other open access licenses offered by Elsevier, is a standard Creative Commons license.

Background

We currently offer researchers, publishing open access in Elsevier journals, a choice of two licenses.

  1. Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY): Allows sharing and adaptation of the content for commercial and non-commercial purposes.
  1. Creative Commons Non-Commercial Non-Derivative license (CC BY NC ND): Allows copying and redistribution of the content for non-commercial purposes but does not permit the sharing and adaptation of the content for commercial or non-commercial purposes.

Considering feedback received from our customers about offering additional choices to authors, we are now piloting a third license (CC BY-NC).

What is new?

The new third-license, the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International — (CC BY-NC 4.0), will allow users to share and make adaptations of the content for non-commercial purposes. Commercial reuse is not permitted.

The new additional license is piloted for the attached list of 51 journals from March 01, 2022.

The pilot will run for 3 months, followed by a review, based on feedback from authors and customers.

You may forward any author queries related to licenses to our support team.

As a result of this, you will see in EOAP and the monthly reports that certain authors select this license for the pilot journals.

Please feel free to inform your institutions. We will keep you updated on the developments.

Could you provide some insights on Elsevier’s introduction of a new license option?

Creative Commons licenses enable authors to define how readers can re-use and share their articles published by Elsevier. We aim to provide authors with the best choice of license options. In order to do so, and in response to feedback, we have introduced the Creative Commons CC BY-NC license for selected open access journals.  Authors remain free to choose the other licenses which Elsevier offers – no options have been removed.

The CC BY-NC license, like the other open access licenses offered by Elsevier, is a standard Creative Commons license. The license is already in regular use in many academic journals.

What is the rationale behind Elsevier offering a new license?

Elsevier currently offers authors a commercial and a non-commercial license option. After considering customer feedback and assessing the implications, we took the decision to offer authors publishing in selected journals an additional non-commercial license option, the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International — (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. This is, like the current options, a standard Creative Commons license. The license is already offered by several other publishers for peer-reviewed journal articles.

Can the Author change the license from CC-BY-NC to CC-BY?

Yes, they could change to a CC BY NC license in the same way as authors choosing a CC BY NC ND license could change to a CC BY license.

What are the reuse options on my paper if I choose license CC BY-NC 4.0?

The new third-license, the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial 4.0 International — (CC BY-NC 4.0), will allow users to share and make adaptations of the content for non-commercial purposes. The commercial reuse element is not permitted.

What is the difference between CC-BY-NC-ND and CC BY-NC 4.0?

CC BY NC ND allows copying and redistribution of the content for non-commercial purposes but does not permit the sharing of adaptations of the content for commercial and non-commercial purposes. CC BY-NC 4.0 is the same as CC-BY-NC-ND but in addition this allows users to share and make adaptations of the content for non-commercial purposes. The commercial reuse element is not permitted.

What is the difference between CC-BY and CC BY-NC?

CC-BY allows users to share and make adaptations of the content for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. CC BY-NC allows users to share and make adaptations of the content, but only for non- commercial purposes.
