Thesis by compendium of publications
The PhD student, with the express authorisation of the thesis supervisor/s and the Academic Committee responsible for the PhD programme, may choose to present the PhD thesis as a compendium of publications. To this end, a minimum of 3 articles published or accepted for publication in scientific journals of recognised prestige or in published books of justified importance, or monographs published by relevant publishers, are required.
To be considered:
a. In at least two of the publications, the doctoral student must appear as the main author (for doctoral students that started their thesis before the academic year 2024-25 there is no restriction in this respect).
b. The date of the publications must be after the approval of the PIFP (for theses started before the academic year 2024-25, publications prior to the approval of the PIFP will be accepted, as long as they were published after the first enrollment).
In general, publications must meet the following requirements:
a. They are open access (Open Access and licensed for reuse, or with authorisation from the publisher to be included in the thesis and published in open access), published in diamond (preferably) or gold. The ‘preprint version’ of articles deposited in the institutional repository Biblos-e Archivo or other similar institutional repository will also be considered valid. This requirement DOES NOT apply to publications prior to 1 October 2024.
b. Publications included in the thesis document must comply with the ‘Criteria for the inclusion of affiliation data in the scientific production generated by the UAM University Community’ (Agreement 29/CG of 15-3-24).This requirement DOES NOT APPLY to publications prior to 1 October 2024,
c. The same publication cannot be part of two doctoral theses presented in this format. The main authors and those listed as recipients for correspondence must authorise the use of the publications for the doctoral thesis. This signature certifies that all authors are aware of and approve of the use of the publications in the thesis, and that they refuse to use their content for another doctoral thesis. You must include a statement (see Downloads Area).
In general terms, the doctoral thesis document must meet the following requirements:
a. It will include a general introduction presenting the articles included, justifying the subject matter and explaining the original contribution of the doctoral student in each of the articles.
b.It will include an overall summary of the results obtained, an integrated discussion of these results, and the conclusions.
c. A complete copy of the papers published or accepted for publication must be included. In the case of papers accepted for publication, the full reference of the journal in which the papers are accepted must be included.
d. If the articles are prior to 1 October 2024 and are not susceptible to open publication, a reduced version of the thesis must also be submitted for publication in the institutional repository of the University, in which these original articles will be replaced by their bibliographical reference, the abstract and the url (DOI) to the article (with hyperlink to it).
Please consider that the some PhD Programmes may not accept this option of presenting the thesis as a compendium of publications, or may have additional requirements.
Information on the publication of articles and theses.
Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies, includes -in article 14.5 and 6- the mandatory open archiving of approved doctoral theses. In the case of theses that are a compendium of publications, or those that include publications derived from them as annexes, the incorporation of the original articles may raise doubts about the infringement of the publisher's copyright. In the document ‘EDUAM_Articles in Thesis Repository’ (download area) an assessment is made of the options to be taken into account in these cases.
